Packing for air freight

Practical packaging principles that protect cargo, keep chargeable weight down and avoid delays at acceptance.

4 min read·Updated October 2026

Core principles

  • Protect for handling. Air cargo is loaded, unloaded and transferred several times. Pack for vibration, stacking and drops.
  • Right-size. Excess air space increases chargeable weight without protecting anything.
  • Secure palletised loads. Use stretch wrap and corner protection; pallet height and weight limits vary by aircraft and provider.

Labelling and marking

  • Mark each piece with consignee, destination and a reference matching the documents.
  • Use orientation arrows and handling labels where relevant.
  • Remove or cover old labels.

Special cargo

Batteries, liquids, aerosols and magnets may be regulated. Perishables need packaging suited to the temperature range and transit time. Declare these upfront — see cargo types.

NotePackaging requirements depend on the commodity, airline and destination. Confirm with your provider before packing.
